Obituary for Richard A. "Dick" Updike

On the morning of September 15, 2015, Richard passed away in Syracuse, NY due to complications from his advanced stage of Alzheimer's disease.

Richard was born in Groton, NY on October 28, 1937. He was the first son of Chester and Hilda Updike.

An educator and a jazz trombonist, Richard Updike graduated from SUNY Cortland and resided in Syracuse for the remainder of his life. Richard was a band member in The Dixieland Update, a Jazz and Dixieland band he formed with his friends, and performed at events all over the Syracuse area. Richard loved what Central New York had to offer and rarely found the desire to travel. He was a great father and was always very supportive of his two sons in their endeavors. Outside of jazz, he enjoyed his early morning runs (in which he rarely missed) and meeting friends for an occasional libation at Riley's. He also learned to appreciate the finer art of cooking in his later years. Richard was known by his friends for his easygoing demeanor and sense of humor.

Richard is survived by his son's Matthew and David (David's wife Emma and daughter Ryan) and brother and sister in law, David and Kathy Updike as well as his dear friend Jane Cate.

A celebration of Richard's life will be held at the Sherwood Inn, 26 W. Genesee St., Skaneateles, NY on the afternoon of October 4th from 4-7p.m. Hors d'oeuvres and drinks will be served.

In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the Alzheimer's Association.
