Obituary for Nellie Murinka

Nellie Mahalik Murinka, 97, passed away peacefully Wednesday April 13, 2016, at the Commons on St. Anthony, where she has been a resident since 2012.
Nellie was a life resident of the Auburn area, residing on Perrine St., and at Genesee Gardens before going to the Commons. She was the daughter of the late Stephen and Anna Mahalik. She worked at the Button Shop and at Simplex Manufacturing two different times. In her retirement, she volunteered for RSVP for 26 years, mostly at the Boyle Center. She was always well dressed, and could be seen always be seen sitting on "Nellie's Bench" on North Street waiting for the bus. Her nicknames were "go go" and Energizer Bunny because she was so active.
She is survived by her daughter Patricia Strecker (Gary Fedigan) of Auburn, and her son Stephen (Bert) of Chicago. She is also survived by her grandchildren Jeff Strecker, Sharon Prindle (Dave) and Suzanne Kalet (Joe), great grandchildren David, Amber and Joey Kalet, Ashley Dunn, great-great grandchildren Kimberly, Natalie, Melanie and Logan, and her sister Jean Dana of Pittsford.
She was predeceased by her husband Stephen in 1983, her brothers John, Andy and Mike Mahalik, and sisters Katherine Jacoba and Ann Sikora.
Her family would like to thank the 2nd Floor Staff at the Commons for their kindness and care given Nellie, and her neighbor Rose from Genesee Gardens for keeping an eye on her.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 9:30 A.M. Saturday in St. Mary's Church. Burial will be in St. Joseph's Cemetery.
Contributions may be made in Nellie's memory to the St. Alphonsus Food Bank or the SCAT Van.
