Obituary for Norma W. Oliver

Norma W. Oliver, 90, passed away Saturday September 28, 2013 at Upstate University Hospital at Community General. She was born on November 8, 1922 to Burdette and Ruth Williams and grew up in Camillus, NY until her family moved to Elbridge, NY during her senior year in high school. She then earned a registered nurse (RN) degree at Syracuse Memorial Hospital. On September 11, 1943 she was married at the Camillus Baptist Church to Donald F. Oliver who she first met when he picked up eggs for GLF at her family farm. Shortly afterwards they moved to their first house on Baker Hill Road in Marcellus, NY. In later years they brought their young family up the road to the old Oliver farm house and then to the house they built together on the back side of the farm on Howlett Hill Road. Norma was active in leading local Cub Scout and 4-H groups and participating in school and church activities with the children. She was an active member of the Marcellus First Presbyterian Church where she was a Deacon and an Elder and a regular at the women circle and volunteer groups. She was an enthusiastic card player, a school nurse, and a member of the Eastern Star. Norma greatly enjoyed traveling around the country and after Don retired they started taking regular trips to Florida and eventually purchased a small place in Lakeland, FL to escape those New York winters. Her senior years were spent between friends in New York and Florida, church work, and enjoying her grandchildren, Jeff (Elizabeth S.) Oliver, Christine (Joe) Duke, Jonathan (HyoSook) Oliver, Elizabeth (Michael) Ko, Jason (Challis) Ryan, Jeff (Linda) Ryan and nine great grandchildren. Her children Don (Elsie) Oliver Jr., David Oliver and Dot (Ron) Ryan will miss and remember her always. She was predeceased by her husband Donald Oliver in 2005, and daughter-in-law Debbie Oliver in 2006.
Services will be Friday, October 4, 2013 at 10:00 AM at the Marcellus First Presbyterian Church 1 E. Main Street, Marcellus, NY.
Contributions may be made to the Marcellus First Presbyterian Church, 1 E. Main St., PO Box 147, Marcellus, NY 13108.
