Obituary for Betty K. Sherman (Noble)

Betty Noble Kisil Sherman died Thursday October 27, 2022 after a long illness. She was a person of exceptional character in dealing with life's challenges and was an inspiration to those around her.

Betty grew up on the family dairy farm near Verona, New York. Helping with chores she milked cows, raised 4-H calves and learned to drive the Oliver tractor. It's also where she developed a life-long love of animals. Throughout her life, the family pets always seemed to love her the most.

Betty started her formal education at the Rocks District # 16, a one room schoolhouse down the road from her home. She attended "the Rock" as it was known, until the 6th grade when she transferred to Verona High School. Graduating as the Salutatorian in 1947 she moved to the big city to attend the Syracuse University School of Journalism on a scholarship. She was a member of the SU Class of '51.

Betty worked in Public Relations in the Syracuse area for many years. One of her first jobs was at the Easy Washing Machine Company. She also worked at Upstate Medical Center, the Syracuse Chamber of Commerce, and the American Red Cross. She was an active member of the Public Relations Society of America and Women in Communications.

A woman of great faith, Betty was a long-time member of the Marcellus United Methodist Church. She served in a number of roles including as the Lay Leader, Chairwoman of the Pastor Parish Committee and Youth Advisor. She was also a member of the United Methodist Women.

Betty believed strongly in the importance of local education and served for many years on the Marcellus School Board.

Betty absolutely loved flowers and gardening. She also enjoyed photography, playing the piano, traveling to visit friends and family, and spending time with her beloved grandchildren.

Although failing physically and cognitively in recent years, Betty's delightful and upbeat nature never waned. She was a favorite of the aides and nurses at the care home. She could always be counted on for a smile.

Betty is survived by her husband, Donald Sherman; her two daughters, Wendy Sherman and Lynne Walter; her grandchildren, Kathleen Walter, Brian Walter and Erin Rotondi; six great grandchildren; her sister-in-law, Beverly Noble; nephews David Ryan, Bruce Ryan, Warren Noble Jr., Andrew Sherman, and Edward Sherman; and nieces, Nancy Engle, Lisa Coffey, Julie Kearns and Katie Galbato. She is predeceased by her parents, Harry Ford and Harriet Blanch Noble; her sister, Beverly Joyce Ryan; her two brothers, Harry Ford Noble, Jr. and Warren Noble; her first husband, Theodore Kisil; and her son, Thomas Sherman.

Services for Betty will be 10 am Wednesday Nov. 2 at the Plis Funeral Home. Calling hours will be from 5-7 pm Tuesday Nov. 1 at the funeral home, 33 North St. Marcellus. She will be buried in Oakwood Cemetery.

Donations can be made to the Marcellus United Methodist Church or the American Red Cross.
