Obituary for Bruce R. Baker

Bruce R. Baker, 82, artist and illustrator, of Marcellus passed away on May 10, 2020. Born in Syracuse, to the late Morse Roy and Gladys Irene (Hilton) Baker, Bruce received a BS in Art Education from New Paltz College, 1959 and a MS in Art Education of Syracuse University, 1966. A veteran of the US Army 1962-64 stationed at Fort Bragg, NC where he met his wife.
Bruce was a Certified NYS Art Teacher teaching at Catskill Public Schools, NY from 1959-62, Cortland City Schools, NY from 1964-66, and the Marcellus Central School District, NY from 1966-1992. He was a private practice artist, illustrator and exhibited in group shows at Artists Central NY-Munson-Williams-Procter Institute, Utica, 1969, NY State Fair, Syracuse, 1973-75, 2004-2007, where he was the recipient of Honorable Mention for sculpture, 1962-64, 1975 and 2004, 1st prize for graphics, 2004, 1st prize for wood, 2006, 1st prize for pastelin, 2006, and Honorable Mention for graphics, 2007. He also exhibited in Cooperstown NY 1974 & 2012, Everson Biennial, Syracuse, 2006; contributing painter Leopold F. Landsberger, N.Y.C., 1979-86; contributing illustrator Firestone Pub. Corp. Miami Lakes, FL, 1982-2001, Spartacus/Centurian, Reno, 1983-2008, Quadriga Art, Inc., N.Y.C. 1993-2012. In his spare time he loved to read and play golf.
He was predeceased by his loving wife of over 50 years, Helen, and his brother, Bryce Baker.
In addition to his sisters, Judith Agan and Beverly Sellmeyer, Bruce is survived by his children; Paul Baker, Suzanne (John) Schweinsburg, Diana (Tom) Finn, and Amy Romano. He also leaves behind his cherished granddaughters Teresa and Laura Finn and Erica Romano.
