Douglas H. Coon, 93, of Hilton Head Island, SC, formerly of Marcellus, NY passed away peacefully on Monday March 18, 2019 in Hilton Head. Born in Syracuse to the late Bertha and Leon Coon, he graduated from Nottingham High School and Syracuse University where he was a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity. He retired as Sr. VP of Haylor, Freyer and Coon. He formerly served on several local boards which include the Syracuse Board of Education where he was past president, Marcellus Board of Education, Plaza Nursing Home where he was past president, the SU Alumni Association, Boys and Girls Club of Syracuse, Child and Family Services, Syracuse Kiwanis Club and he was an Eagle Scout. He was also a former member of the Skaneateles Country Club, Bellevue Country Club and the Syracuse Golf Bandits. Doug was also a member of the Masons, Shriners and Jesters, the Marcellus United Methodist Church and Bluffton United Methodist Church. Doug served our country proudly in the US Navy during WWII.
Doug leaves behind his children Suzanne (Robert) Eastman, Cynthia (James) McAllister and Corinne (Robert) Yousey. He also leaves behind 6 grandchildren, 3 great grandchildren, sister-in-law Claire Coon, and several nieces and nephew. Besides his parents he was also predeceased by his wives Mary Ann Haylor Coon, and Mary T. Lewis Coon, and brother Ralph Coon.
A memorial service celebrating Doug’s life will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday May 18 at the Marcellus United Methodist Church. The family will greet friends following the service. Burial will be private in Oakwood Cemetery.
