Obituary for Garth A. Snyder

Garth A. Snyder, 93, a lifelong resident of Marcellus passed away peacefully at home on Thursday May
26, 2022. Born in Marcellus to the late William and Margery (Dye) Snyder, he was the owner and
operator of Snyder Appliance in Marcellus. Prior to the appliance store he worked as a manager at Cole
Typewriter Co for 16 years and after his retirement he worked at the Marcellus Park for 29 years serving
as manager for 10 of those years. He was a faithful member of the Marcellus First Presbyterian Church
where he was a trustee, elder and sang in the church choir for 65 years. Garth was the Mayor of
Marcellus for four years and also served as a Trustee for six years. He was a member of Morning Star
Lodge #524 F.A&M where he was Master in 1966, 1978 and 1979 and was also the District Deputy Grand
Master 2nd Onondaga District in 1982; he was also a New York State Bow Hunting Instructor. Garth was
also a founding member of the Marcellus Chorale and the all-male singing group, the Notables-groups he sang with for many years.
Garth received many awards over the years with some of them are being the Grand Marshall of the
Marcellus Olde Home Days Parade, Service Above Self Award from the Marcellus Rotary Club, Indian
River, Fl., shuffleboard league Hall of Fame, the Ocean Breeze Florida Club and the Carnegie Hero Award
for saving a person’s life in a fire rescue.
Garth is survived by his wife of 67 years, the former Gerry Ryder, daughter Wendy (Steve) Osborne, sons
Craig (Lori), Jeff (Gina) and Curt Snyder. He also leaves behind seven cherished grandchildren and six
great grandchildren. Besides his parents he was also predeceased by his brother Charles “Windy” Snyder.
A Memorial service celebrating Garth’s life will be held in the Marcellus First Presbyterian Church on
Thursday June 2nd at 11 AM with a reception to follow at the church.
