Obituary for Jim A. Mahar

James A. “Jim” Mahar, 76, passed away on June 4, 2022, following a valiant battle against lymphoma. A lifelong resident of Marcellus, NY, Jim was the son of and was preceded in death by his mother Corrine Wallace Mahar. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army who served in the Vietnam war. Jim graduated from Marcellus High School and attended Cayuga County Community College. He retired from Niagara Mohawk/National Grid in 2012 following 35 years of service.
A man of many talents and interests, Jim had a lot of hobbies. He enjoyed photography, capturing sporting events, weddings, nature and especially his family. Jim’s interest in scuba diving took him on many underwater adventures in the Caribbean and he became PADI divemaster. Closer to home, Jim spent most of his summers boating on Skaneateles Lake where we enjoyed captaining his boat and pulling his kids and grandkids on tubes, skis and wakeboards.
An avid sportsman, he taught hunter education and firearm safety courses for New York State. Jim was a member the Camillus Sportsmans Club and Syracuse Pistol Club.
In retirement, he played golf with his friends weekly and volunteered with Friends of the Marcellus Park.
A talented baker, Jim was known for his cheese bread, sticky buns and pizza. If you ever received one of his baked goods, you know he counted you as a special friend.
Jim is survived by his wife of 49 years, Marie Neuman and their children Michael (Barb) Mahar, Katherine (Stacy) Reagan and Jeffrey (Michelle) Mahar, grandchildren David Mahar, Ethan Mahar, Taylor Mahar, Andrea Reagan and Grace Reagan, sister Patricia (Richard) Lathrop, many nieces and nephews and special friends. Also, grand dogs Zooey, Roxy, Veda, Appa, Kiera and Maggie.
Jim received excellent care throughout his illness from the doctors and nurses at SUNY Upstate and the Upstate Caner Center. The family expresses special gratitude to the ICU nursing staff on 6I for their care and compassion. During his final days, Upstate’s Hospital to Home program was a blessing for the Mahar family, especially the home nurse, Maria, who provided so much support to the family.
Services for Jim will be at 11 am Thursday June 9 at Onondaga County Veteran’s Cemetery with military honors. Calling hours will be from 5-7 pm Wednesday June 8 at the Plis Funeral Home, 33 North St., Marcellus.
In lieu of flower donations may be made in Jim’s honor to Friends of the Marcellus Park.
