Obituary for Jane M. Gere (Henderson)

Jane Marion (Henderson) Gere, passed away on Wednesday, February 17, 2021 in Marcellus, NY. Jane was a beloved Aunt to many nieces and nephews in the Henderson, Hercsa, Simmons, Sanders and Stone clans.

Jane and her twin brother Douglas were born at home on a farm on East Hill in Marcellus, April 1, 1927. Quite the April fool surprise to her parents Mabel (Case) and Raymond Henderson, and their 6 older siblings!

She graduated from Marcellus High School and attended St Mary’s School of Nursing. Jane married Leon Gere in1975 following their move to Southern California. She returned to the Syracuse area following her husband’s death in 1992. Jane ultimately resided at Upper Crown Landing in Marcellus beginning in 2008 where she remained until her passing.

She enjoyed numerous jaunts with her sisters, Edna and Mora and niece, Cathy. She was a friend to all at Upper Crown Landing, especially her good friend and neighbor Bill Douglas. Being an early riser she delivered the newspaper to residents in the building. She took such pleasure from the daily newspaper. Never having learned to drive, Jane would regularly walk into town, browse at the library, and shop at the Methodist Church thrift Shop and the Marcellus Farmer’s Market. More recently, illness kept her close to home.

Jane was able to thrive at home thanks to her niece Mary Jane who, among numerous kindnesses and loving care, assembled a team of wonderful aides enabling Jane to remain comfortably at home until her passing. Our sincerest thanks to her aides Becky, Sharon, Laura and Margaret for their thoughtful and thorough care. Thanks as well to Cathy who provided Jane comfort during her final days. These are fabulous women who cared for another fabulous woman.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Leon and all of her siblings Henry, Edna, Mora, Alma, Ray Jr., John and Douglas, nephews John Hercsa, Daniel Stone and niece, Becky Davis, long lifetime friends Rita, Ruth and Alice Mahan.

In honor of Jane’s wishes not to have a Memorial service, she asked all to please hold happy memories of her in their heart. Donations may be made via cash, check or PayPal to the Marcellus Free Library, or can be dropped off at the information desk during regular business hours.

Arrangements are being undertaken by the Plis Funeral Home, including a guest book online at their website www.plisfuneralhome.com. The family would be grateful to those wishing to share remembrances of Jane as to the unique character she was.

Jane will be tenderly missed.
