Obituary for Joan M. Dwyer (Quinlan)

Joan M. (Quinlan) Dwyer, 72, of Marcellus, NY died November 7, after an 11 year fight with multiple myeloma.
Born in Syracuse on June 8, 1950, to John and Mary Jane (Burke) Quinlan, Joan was raised in Tipperary Hill and graduated from Central Technical High School in 1968.
After marrying, she raised her family in Marcellus, spending over a decade as an at home mom. She got her real estate license in the early 80s and spend close to two decades as an agent, followed by several years in sales with Kaufman’s furniture store, and ending her working years in central registration at Auburn Hospital.
Joan was quick-witted, no nonsense, spoke her mind, and didn’t suffer fools gladly. She was straightforward, and you always knew where you stood with her.
While she didn’t dedicate to one specific hobby, Joan was crafty and spent time on a variety of activities over the years, dabbling in miniatures, needlework & sewing, making Christmas ornaments, and all sorts of other crafty projects, as well as being an avid reader. She was creative, had a good eye, and was a bit of a perfectionist.
She loved spending time with her grandchildren, as well as with her longtime group of friends at monthly dinners, pitch league, boating, camping trips to the Adirondacks or just chatting over dinner or a bottle of wine.
Her many cousins were like extended siblings to her, and she felt blessed to be raised among them in close proximity and in the generation in which they were raised.
Joan was pre-deceased by her parents and her siblings, Nancy and Steve. She is survived by: her children, Adelle, Corey, and Erin; her grandchildren, Ciara, Kiley, Madison, Miles, Kayla, Eva, Kieran, Jayda and Carlin; her brothers, Tom, whose help she especially appreciated, Jack, and Jim; and many close cousins, dear friends, and nieces/nephews.
The family appreciates greatly the friends and family who went above and beyond to help her remain in her home these last couple difficult years, helping with rides, housework, personal care, and social connection. I’m afraid to miss someone by listing names, but they know who they are!
The family will host a celebration of life reception on Saturday, November 26, at 11 a.m., at the Marietta House, 2819 Rte. 174, Marietta.
Joan has donated her body to the SUNY Upstate Medical School, so, in lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society at lls.org.
