Obituary for Mary V. "Ginny" Heckel

Mary Virginia (Ginny) Heckel, 90, passed peacefully on Friday, September 13, 2013 at St. Camillus Health Center in Syracuse, NY. Born in Mechanicsburg, PA, Ginny married Thomas G. Heckel on December 4, 1943, and the couple celebrated 62 years together until his passing in 2005.

Ginny loved to cook in the Pennsylvania Dutch tradition, and enjoyed entertaining family and friends. She was a member of the First Unitarian Universalist Society of Syracuse, and the Onondaga County Antique Dealers' Association. An antique dealer for more than 25 years, Ginny managed an antique shop at her home in Marcellus, NY until 1993. She and Tom enjoyed their retirement attending country auctions in New York, Pennsylvania, and Ontario, Canada where they summered in Gananoque and the Thousand Islands for more than 60 years. In her later years, Ginny became an avid Syracuse University basketball fan, and would anxiously await each season to cheer on her Orangemen.

Ginny is survived by her two sons Thomas G. Heckel, Jr. (Tim) and his wife Christine of Dedham, MA; Alexander G. Heckel of Boulder City, NV; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

There will be no calling hours and services will be at the convenience of the family.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Alzheimer's Association Central New York Chapter, 441 W. Kirkpatrick St, Syracuse, NY 13204.
