Obituary for Norma T. Metroka (Olsen)

Norma T. Olsen Metroka, 92, formerly of Throop, died Monday, April 8, 2019, at the Commons on St. Anthony, following an extended illness.
Norma was a native of Long Island, the daughter of the late Charles and Dorothy Morton Olsen. She has resided in the Auburn area for more than 80 years. She was a graduate of Auburn East High School, Class of 1944, and Auburn City Hospital School of Nursing in 1947. She received her Bachelor of Science (Magna Cum Laude) from Syracuse University in 1962, and her Master’s in Education from Cortland State College in 1965.
She started working as a School Nurse in the Weedsport School District in 1963, and from 1965 until her retirement in 1985 she served as a Health teacher. The Apple Teachers Award is a Scholarship in the Weedsport District named for her. She was chosen several times to act as Senior Class Advisor.
Norma’s was active at St. Mary’s Church in Auburn as a Eucharistic Minister for more than 10 years. She was a 20 plus year member and past president of the Rosary and Scapular Society. She was a 20 plus member of the Throop Fire Dept. Auxiliary, and a lifelong member of the Candlelight club.
She is survived by her son John “Duke” Metroka of Auburn, her daughter Amy Metroka and son-in-law Guillermo Cruz of Brooklyn, NY and her granddaughter Isabel Cruz. She was predeceased by her husband Edward Metroka in 2009, her sister Dorothy Hemans and her brother Charles Olsen.
Funeral services will be at 8:45 a.m. Friday from the Plis Funeral Home, and 9:30 A.M. in St. Mary’s Church. Burial will be in St. Joseph’s Cemetery. Friends are invited to call Thursday from 5 to 8 P.M. at the funeral home, 220 State St., Auburn.
Contributions may be made in Norma’s memory to Tyburn Academy, 17 Clymer St. Auburn.
Norma’s family is grateful for the care given to Norma during her stay at the Commons.
