Obituary for Phyllis Partlow

Phyllis "Pauline" (Vile) Partlow, 73, of Horseheads, NY passed away suddenly while enjoying one of her many sightseeing experiences around the world. Phyllis graduated from Marcellus high school in 1956, SUNY Cobleskill in 1958 and Elmira College with her Bachelor of Science in Human Services in 1973. Phyllis spent her life giving support and encouragement to all around her. Phyllis watched over many of us from a distance sharing her wisdom where she saw fit, while allowing us to make mistakes. She would make suggestions and leave the choices up to us. She retired from the Elmira Psychiatric Center after 30 years of dedicated service and loved working with people so much that she continued her career 11 more years at Family Services of Chemung County. Phyllis continued to help those around her until her death. She was a volunteer with RSVP for over 16 years donating close to 1000 hours of her time to two of the impact programs – Ombudsman and Friendly visiting. She was featured in the RSVP newsletter in October of 2011. In the article she was quoted, "If you're going to do something, then do your best job". In regards to spending her time volunteering she responded, "How can you just do nothing?" "You just don't take, you give. It's self-satisfaction. We all have the need to interact with others. It helps keep the brain active and challenged". Phyllis will truly be missed for her humor, support and words of encouragement. One of her favorite sayings "it is what it is" will live on in our hearts. Phyllis loved to travel, take pictures, read books and camp at numerous destinations throughout her life. In the later years her camping adventures were devoted to Otisco Lake where she could also enjoy spending time with her brother's families and especially her great nieces and nephews. Phyllis was always laughing and socializing with anyone she met which resulted in her developing many amazing friendships throughout the world. Surviving is her dog Martha, her sister Elsie Holfolter, sister in law Patricia (Oster) Vile, sister in law Corliss (Hooper) Barnes and several nieces and nephews. She was pre deceased by her brothers, Francis E. "Cy" Vile, Herald "Jim" Vile, Floyd "Johnny" Hooper, and Edward "Ted" Hooper. Please join us anytime between 1-4pm on March 18, 2012 at the Rufus Tanner House Bed and Breakfast 60 Sagetown Rd., Pine City, NY 14871.
