Obituary for Richard A. Smith

Richard Allan Smith passed away peacefully on Thursday, June 14, 2018. Richard, 91, a WWII Veteran, was a lifelong resident of Marcellus, and a lifelong member of the Marcellus Methodist Church. He graduated from Marcellus High School in 1944, served with the US Navy in the Pacific from 1944 to 1946, and graduated from Springfield College on the GI Bill in 1950.
In 1988, Richard retired from a 38 year career in banking, most of it with Merchants Bank, where he was a VP, Branch Manager, and Training Officer. Retirement enabled him to spend more time on hobbies like fishing, sailing, gardening, and bird watching, and to enjoy painting and mowing as part of the crew at Marcellus Park. He was a long time member of the Marcellus Historical Society, serving as Treasurer and Trustee. He enjoyed spending winters in Jensen Beach, Florida. He spent most of his summers at Amber Beach on Otisco Lake, and loved to tell stories of his experiences in life.
He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Frances, sister Janet Fisher, brother Raymond (Janet), daughter Lynne (Bob Smith), sons Kevin, Jeff (Mary Beth), Brad (Beth Ann), and Marty (Melanie), eleven grandchildren, and two great grandchildren. He was predeceased by his brother Robert and daughter–in-law Krista.
A Memorial Service will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in Richard's name may be made to Friends of Marcellus Park, PO Box 301, Marcellus, NY 13108.
