Obituary for Robert C. Atkinson

Robert C. Atkinson, 82, of Marcellus passed away Sunday Jan. 2, 2011 at his home.
The son of the late Cecil and Ella Norman Atkinson, he was a 1946 graduate of Onondaga Valley Academy and studied journalism at Syracuse University.
Bob worked for the Post Standard, beginning as bureau correspondent in Saranac Lake in 1954. He became managing editor in 1965 and executive editor in 1981. As executive director he directed the newspaper's news and editorial content. Stories published during his tenure won a host of journalism honors. His editorial innovations included The Readers' Page, a daily selection of letters to the editor, and Public Forum, and exchange of opinions with readers. He retired in 1993.
He was the past president of the New York State Society of Newspaper Editors and New York State Associated Press Association. He was also a past member of the New York State Advisory Panel, United Press International and the American Society of Newspaper Editors. The Syracuse Press Club inducted him into its wall of fame in October.
Bob was a Navy veteran, serving for 6 years of active duty with principle duty stations on the aircraft carrier USS Tarawa CV-40 and Fleet Air Wings Atlantic, Norfolk, VA. He was the historian and editor of "Tradewinds" of the USS Tarawa Veterans' Association.
Bob loved to boat at his Henderson Harbor camp, antique collecting, genealogy, cooking, painting and cruise travel.
He was predeceased by his wife Dee Pettengill Atkinson on March 4, 1990.
He is survived by his daughter Melinda Atkinson of Marcellus, sons Steven of Williamstown, James of Camillus, Thomas of Syracuse, eight grandchildren, love and friend of 18 years Christine Hiller, step brother Bob McLaughlin and the McLaughlin family of Maryland.
Calling hours for Bob where from 5-8 p.m. Friday January 7, 2011 at the Plis Funeral Home, 33 North St., Marcellus. Their will be no services.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Baltimore Woods Nature Center.
