Obituary for Susan A. Coomber (Zimmer)
Susan Anne Zimmer Coomber of Auburn returned to her heavenly home Saturday, May 11, 2019 at the age of 68, after a courageous battle with cancer. Her devotion to her family and her firm belief in God supported her in her struggle and ultimately gave her peace.
A life resident of Auburn, Susan was born on March 14, 1951, the daughter of the late Michael and Rose Mary Horbal Zimmer. She was the eldest of two children. She graduated from Auburn Central High School, and earned a Bachelor of Science with High Honors from SUNY Oneonta in 1973 and a Master of Science in Education from SUNY Cortland in 1976. In 1982, she married the love of her life, Roger Coomber. She was a communicant of St. Hyacinth’s Church and later St. Mary’s Church.
Susan was employed in the Auburn School District for 34 years until her retirement in 2010, where she taught 6th grade mathematics and language arts at East Middle School and, later, remedial mathematics at Seward Elementary School. Susan was a member of several social organizations and was active in the community. Her family, friends, and former students remember her as a kind, patient, generous, nurturing woman who always encouraged them to pursue their dreams. Her greatest joy was spending time with her grandchildren.
Surviving her is her husband of 37 years, Roger Coomber; her brother; her daughter Kristin (Christopher) Jenkins; her son, Michael (Sarah Blair) Coomber; grandson Brayden Michael Coomber; and granddaughter Rosalynn Theresa Coomber. Besides her parents she was predeceased by her aunt Sophie Horbal.
Friends and family are invited to attend her Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 am Tuesday, May 21 in St. Mary’s Church. Burial will be in St. Joseph’s Cemetery. A repast will follow at Springside Inn to celebrate Susan’s life. Contributions can be made to the Michael E. Connolly Lung Cancer Research Endowment of the Upstate Foundation in Susan’s memory, to support lung cancer research at Upstate Medical University.
