Condolence: Today, as I waited for Bill to show for his haircut, I had an uneasy feeling when I called his number to find it disconnected. It was unlike him and usually early for his appointment, it made me google his name. I can't express how sad I am to learn he passed. Bill always had an easy way about him, a story or two, and it seemed he was a person who enjoyed helping his church, and others. It is hard to believe someone with his zest for life can be gone. My sincerest condolences to his family and friends. He will be missed.

Condolence: I was very saddened to learn of Bill's death, and yet I can't help but smile whenever I think of him. He always had a smile and was an extremely hard worker. Although I worked closely with Bill only a few times at DOT, I have heard many stories about him. Here's the one story that I've heard that seems to sum them all up better than any of rest:

Once (and probably more than once), while he was working on a Land Survey Crew for DOT (which he did for many years), they arrived at a site with steep slopes, heavy brush and God knows what else on both sides of the road. The slopes probably had plenty of thorns and briers and must have been a very bad place to be, much less work and walk through. When they saw the place, Bill's supervisor exclaimed (jokingly, I hope): "I wouldn't send a DOG up there! Willie! Go up there!"

As funny as that story might be, Bill's supervisor knew that he could count on him to do the hardest, most unpleasant work. With the Survey methods that we used back in those days, he would have had to walk up and down a line perpendicular to the road, up and down those steep slopes through that heavy brush every 50 feet, on both sides of the road. Although I wasn't there, I would guess that those conditions probably went on for at least a mile or two, possibly much more.

From his obituary, I see that he continued his hard work after he retired. I'm not surprised. My condolences to his friends and family. Your loss is far greater than mine.

Condolence: The description "He's was loved by all" gets used often when people pass. In Bill's case I can honestly say it was accurate. Few people enjoyed everyday life as much as Bill. I always saw him with a smile whether he was working the road or selling tickets or bantering with Yankee fans about the virtues of Baseball in Bean Town. Bill leaves a big hole in our lives but we all can smile at the memories. Memory eternal !

Condolence From: Dana Martino
Condolence: So sorry that I could not make it back for this sad occasion, Simply put, Bill Stanley was one of the finest men I've met along my journey. To Nellie, Freddie, his daughters, friends and family, my deepest sympathy. This is a loss not easily compensated, regardless of the gifts heaped upon us daily.

Let me add this remembrance. Many of my friends and I knew Bill as "Steinbrenner", the flamboyant 'owner' of the RNC softball teams, which, under his guidance, won championships in at least two softball leagues. Bill was willing to do whatever it took, in terms of adding players, to make the team competitive with the best teams in the league. I understand that Auburn is but a blip on the cosmic radar, but a championship is a championship, no matter where you win it. Ask Lebron. And not all that easy to come by. Ask any Cleveland Browns' fan.

My good friend, Steve Sluty, and I were reminiscing online about a photo we remembered. It featured Bill, a wad of bills fanned out in his hand, with his arm around Tom Miskell, the last piece to the Russian Club championship team, in a symbolic signing. And there, ever present, is that memorable cat-that-ate-the-canary smile, so broad, on Bill's face. It was the perfect Steinbrenner moment.

And so, Steiner, my good friend, as Saint Peter takes you through the pearly gates and shows you the renovations they've done to the "Y-Field" up there, understand that we are all there with you in spirit. And when he asks you to field a team for a new league, say "yes, I think I can put something together." And then save a spot on the roster for me. Because I could never pitch for anyone but you.

With Love and the Utmost Respect,

Dana (the 'doctor') Martino

Condolence: To Bill's Family:
I'm so sorry to hear of Bill's passing. We worked together for many years, and after his retirement, I enjoyed his company at many parties, clambakes, etc. Bill always had a smile, always showed concern for other people's problems, and was just genuinely a nice person and good friend. He will be missed. I have the flu and won't be able to attend the calling hours, but please know that you will all be in my heart at this sad time.
